This brings me nicely to my first major criticism that I think would’ve remedied the games reception immensely. 9.5 times out of 10 you cannot react quick enough to a trap so are killed and have to reload. That said, it does rely on the trial and error formula. Tomb raider is about acrobatics and death traps, this section delivers on that. There’s plenty of boulder surprises and poisonous cobras in bushes, but I found I didn’t mind as I always felt nervous when entering a new area - which gives the game a sort of anxious atmosphere. Something the newer games seem to have forgotten mostly.Ī problem with the India chapter is its reliance on spring traps. The River Ganges level in the India chapter is a great piece of level design with a long sprawling multilayered course to ride your quad bike along, occasionally hopping off to clear obstacles culminating in a rewarding dive off a waterfall into a pool of water. The levels are huge, sometimes to its strength and other times to its detriment. At its core it’s pretty standard TR level design, though mirroring the shift in TR2 there does seem to be a bit more of a push to the urban level design more than dusty musty tombs. Returning as an adult I think the game deserves a fairer shake of the stick than it gets. It took everything people enjoyed about 2 and then dialled it up to 11 - sometimes to its own detriment.Īs a kid I always found TR3 too difficult, and contented myself with level skipping about and mostly just buggering about in the manor locking the Butler in the fridge as all kids did. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games Listįor many the classic tomb raider series peaked at Tomb Raider 2 and the 3rd entry was often considered bloated and the first of the diminishing returns.
